Why Hauppauge PVR footage won't import into FCP ?

Summary:In this article, you will know how to import Hauppauge PVR AVCHD footage to final cut pro for editing on Mac.

If you are experienced in video recording, you must be familiar with Hauppauge HD PVR. HD PVR is the world's first High Definition video recorder for making real-time H.264 compressed recordings at resolutions up to 1080i. HD-PVR records component video (YCrCb) from video game consoles and cable TV and satellite set top boxes, with a built-in IR blaster to automatically change TV channels for scheduled recordings. Audio is recorded using two channel stereo or optical audio with five channel Dolby Digital.

Have you encountered problems like this?

"I have h264-encoded movs of videogame footage captured with a Hauppauge HD PVR. Final Cut 6 and 7 both refuse to ingest them, though QT Pro will open them. Even if I transcode with QT Pro to ProRes (HQ), Final Cut will not recognize the file. Has anyone else encountered this, or found a workaround for it?”

How to solve the HD PVR footages to FCP problem?

First, let's know more about its recording format:

From Hauppauge HD PVR official website, you will know the recording format is AVCHD, which can be used to burn Blu-ray compatible discs. Two hours of HD recordings, recorded at 5 Mbits/sec, can be burnt onto a standard 4.7 GByte DVD-R or DVD-RW disc for playback on a Blu-ray disc player.

There are three H.264 formats you can choose when recording a video:

.TS, which is a generic 'transport stream' compatible with many digital media players

.M2TS, which is compatible with the Sony Playstation3

.MP4, which is compatible with the XBox360

Solution:

The Hauppauge HD PVR recordings is MP4 or AVCHD TS/M2TS format, these formats are not supported by many editing software, including FCP (X). So if you want to transfer Hauppauge HD PVR 1080p AVCHD files to FCP (X) , you need to convert first. FCP (X) best supported video format is Apple ProRes 422 codec MOV format, so if you convert Hauppauge HD PVR AVCHD to ProRes 422 format, you can edit Hauppauge HD PVR footages in FCP (X) smoothly without rendering.

Now you can download Hauppauge HD PVR AVCHD to FCP converter, you will see the interface as showed below:
